What are Websafe Colors, W3C Standard Color Names & Cross-browser Color Values

When you are designing a Website it is advisable to use Web safe colors. Colors are generally specified in either RGB triplet or Hexadecimal Format. For example RGB(255,0,0) or #FF0000 are same and denotes RED.

The VGA color set consists of 16 named colors. These colors are originally used as the standard EGA color palette. W3C has listed these 16 color names that will validate with an HTML validator. They are: aqua, black, blue, fuchsia, gray, green, lime, maroon, navy, olive, purple, red, silver, teal, white, and yellow.

Fuchsia Aqua Yellow White
Purple Teal Olive Silver
Blue Lime Red Gray
Navy Green Maroon Black

After that computers used to support 256 colors only. So Netscape came up with 216 Web Safe Colors (40 are reserved by Windows and MAC). These colors are not dithered when a Web browser shows them. So if it finds any other color then the browser dithers it to the closest match. But these days with High Resolution Display systems these may be irrelevant. But it is safe to use Websafe colors. However, that is not enough. It is worth noting that color is just one part of the design puzzle. Every site owner must consider design techniques and best hosting.

As of 2007, personal computers typically have at least 16-bit color and usually 24-bit (TrueColor). Even mobile devices have at least 16-bit color, driven by the inclusion of cameras on cellphones. The use of “web-safe” colors has fallen into practical disuse.
