When you talk of BlackBerry, the image that crops up in your mind is of a phone with full QWERTY keypad facilitating texting and e-mailing. BlackBerry Torch 9800, is the latest offering from Canadian firm Research In Motion (RIM) for smartphone buyers. With intense competition in the smartphone segment, thanks to devices such as HTC Desire, iPhone 4, Samsung Galaxy, BlackBerry Torch 9800 seeks to give a tough fight to its counterparts.
BlackBerry Torch 9800 Design and Display
BlackBerry Torch 9800 is a touch screen slider phone of RIM, the first of its kind, and the company has done a fairly decent job with the design of the phone. The sliding mechanism of the phone is quite smooth. However, there is the absence of designated touch point to slide open the device. Overall Torch 9800 is solidly built and with the slider closed, the phone measures 61x112x14 mm, weighing 161 grams.
The optical trackpad under the screen works as usual with no real surprises which enhances the productivity of the device. The volume buttons are on the right, while the mute/locker button is on the top. One can easily read longer e-mails and web pages with the option of using the keypad and trackpad.
If you compare Torch’s screen with other BlackBerry models, then you will find it at par with other members within its family. However, compared to Android devices and iPhone 4, the 3.2″ touch screen falls a little short of expectation. The screen displays pictures measuring 480×360 pixels. The display is equipped with a proximity sensor for auto turn-off and is capable of displaying 16 million colors. Compared to touch screen of Storm and Storm 2, the Torch 9800’s touch screen is more responsive.
